A printer will not print: first checks

Windows 11 and a printer you are authorized to use

Help center

When to use this: A printer will not print — use these initial checks when this matches your situation. On a work or school device, follow your organization's policies and stop if a setting is managed.

  1. Read the printer’s display for paper, ink, cover or jam warnings.
  2. Check power and cables without forcing connectors.
  3. For wireless printing, confirm the computer and printer use the intended network.
  4. Select the correct printer when printing.
  5. Try one short, nonconfidential document.

Check the result: The printer produces a test page or gives a specific error.

Stop and get help when needed: Do not cancel other people’s jobs or remove a shared printer. Avoid repeated printing of sensitive documents.
