Computer is slow or freezing

Quick checks that resolve most slowdowns before a technician needs to connect.

Help center

Most slowdowns come from a long uptime, low disk space, or a background update. Work through these steps in order and note what changes.

  1. Restart the computer fully (Restart, not Shut down) and sign back in.
  2. Close browser tabs and applications you are not using, then check Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) for anything using near 100% CPU, memory, or disk.
  3. Confirm at least 10% free space on the system drive. Empty the Recycle Bin and Downloads folder if it is tight.
  4. Install pending Windows or macOS updates and restart again.

If the computer freezes at the same moment every time (opening a file, printing, joining a call), tell us that detail — it usually points straight at the cause.
