Word closes or freezes when you open it

Word desktop on Windows; a saved test document

Help center

When to use this: Word closes or freezes when you open it — use these initial checks when this matches your situation. On a work or school device, follow your organization's policies and stop if a setting is managed.

  1. Save work in other apps. Try opening Word without opening your original document.
  2. If Word still fails, hold Ctrl while opening its shortcut and confirm Office Safe Mode.
  3. Try a new blank document. Note whether this works.
  4. Close Word, then reopen normally to leave Safe Mode.

Check the result: A working blank document helps distinguish an app issue from a document issue.

Stop and get help when needed: Stop before removing add-ins or changing registry settings. Keep the original document unchanged.

Need hands-on help?: Request DefenderTech support for individualized investigation or changes. We will explain the scope and estimate and ask for authorization before paid work begins. Do not include passwords, recovery keys or verification codes in your request.
