Choose the right microphone and speaker in Teams

Teams desktop; connected headset if used

Help center

When to use this: Choose the right microphone and speaker in Teams — use these initial checks when this matches your situation. On a work or school device, follow your organization's policies and stop if a setting is managed.

  1. Connect your headset before the meeting.
  2. Open Teams settings and find Devices or the audio device settings.
  3. Choose your intended speaker and microphone separately.
  4. Use the available test option, or arrange a short test with a colleague.
  5. Check the headset’s physical mute switch as well as Teams mute.

Check the result: You can hear the test and your voice reaches the selected microphone.

Stop and get help when needed: Do not change organization-wide meeting policies. Avoid testing with confidential conversations.

Need hands-on help?: Request DefenderTech support for individualized investigation or changes. We will explain the scope and estimate and ask for authorization before paid work begins. Do not include passwords, recovery keys or verification codes in your request.
